Lead Testing
The Innov-X hand-held, portable XRF is the new gold standard for nondestructive testing for lead inspection. It is a point-and-shoot tool that can test for lead in landfills, hazardous clean-up sites, consumer electronic materials, children's toys and jewelry, cooking or eating materials, packaging, and in any other materials that could contain lead.
RoHS, or Restriction of Hazardous Substances is a directive enacted by the European Union in 2002 requiring all new electronic devices to meet a specific set of environmental standards by July 1, 2006. RoHS is often referred to as the "lead-free" directive.
RoHS is not a law; rather, it is a directive which restricts the use of six specific hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.
RoHS is closely related to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), another directive which sets goals for the collection, recycling and recovery of electrical goods. WEEE is part of a legislative initiative to resolve the problem of huge amounts of toxic e-waste.
RoHS restricts the use of the following 6 substances:
Young children are at the greatest risk for lead poisoning because they play and crawl inside and outside buildings built before 1978 and in soil and dust that may contain lead. To make matters worse, children between 12 and 24 months of age often have their hands or toys in their mouths.
What about home lead testing kits?
Lead testing kits range from $8-$19 and because of recent media attention are often sold out. It is recommended that you test every toy with a painted surface - but that means with home testing that you may end up spending hundreds of dollars of home tests that may not even give you accurate results.
Are home lead testing kits reliable?
The government is warning consumers not to use home testing kits to check children's toys and other products for lead. A report on October 22, 2007 announced that most of the tests don't work.
Consumer Reports found that three of the five lead test kits, Homax Lead Check, Lead Check Household Lead Test Kit and Lead Inspector, detected surface or accessible lead but don't detect lead embedded below the surface.
Can I rent an XRF analyzer and test my toys myself?
Sure! If you and your neighbors all want to get together and share the cost of a one day rental, you can test every toy in your neighborhood. If the normal day rental rate is cost prohibitive for you, we do offer in-house testing at a lower rate and can provide you with a full report.
